> When Lee asked Park about Blackpink, Park described the quartet as a global girl group that had performed at Coachella in the US. He then emphasized the committee’s ambition: “Coachella is the world’s leading festival. Our goal at the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange is to create a festival that surpasses even Coachella,” Park said.

I hate it when politicians or businessmen make statements like these because it’s so irresponsible. They usually have no idea how to implement these things. They hire experts to plan it, give them a piss-poor budget, and then expect people to show up just because they use big-name artists. I don’t really have high hopes for this one.
We also can’t ignore that the appeal of Coachella is getting drunk or high while camping. People go there to listen to artists but they’re also there to have a crazy good time. The culture in asia is different. It’s not going to be easy to “surpass Coachella” just because JYP said so.

This is so typical of JYP

Didn’t half the population get pissed off simply because of Kwon Eunbi’s sideboobs?
Idk man, don’t see it happening.

Sounds fun and great for PR but come on lol. Coachella spent decades trying to build its rep. While many believe the festival is a shell of its former self it’s still so massive that it became a very recognizable event globally. Can JYP and this board do it? Maybe but they better not expect to do it quickly.

What is JYP planning to do that will make this Korean festival as culturally relevant on a global scale as Coachella? If JYP were truly capable of creating a pop culture phenomenon bigger than its original or American counterpart, wouldn’t the biggest K-pop artists right now be from JYP instead of BLACKPINK and BTS?

They still don’t have adequately sized concert venues.
All these promises (and exchanges of money 🤫) and nothing to show for it.
JYP getting into politics is icky to me…
