I mean, one is a small dog, and the other is a mythical flaming eagle that never dies.

  1. A phoenix sure can die, though. I mean, its whole point is that it can “re-birth” itself after it turns to ashes!

And, I’ll be “the guy” that says that Papillon is actually the french word for “Butterfly”; so, not a reference to that dog breed at all (that also took its name from the similar shape to a butterfly’s wings).

Finally, you never specified the contest into which these two “creatures” were entered in the first place. As such, I wouldn’t be so quick as to automatically crown the Phoenix as the winner. There’s countless comparison where a butterfly (or even that dog) would win.

In a battle of what makes the best pet, the dog takes it. Sure it could make a mess but it won’t burn your house down.

  3. Papillon is the nickname of a safecracker, because of the butterfly tattoo on his chest. In France, he is wrongly convicted of murdering a pimp in 1933 and is sentenced to life imprisonment in French Guiana.

I think “Papillon” might be a reference to the movie from 1973 or the remake in 2017. The main protagonist in the movie is a man who has the nickname “Papillon” because of a butterfly tattoo on his chest. He is falsely accused of murder and sentenced to prison in a place called “Devil’s Island”.

Some of the song lyrics seem to be about the ending where Papillon escapes from imprisonment by diving off a high cliff into the sea.

In the movie, Papillon is sentenced to 5 years of solitary confinement during which he has a number of dreams and hallucinations. I think the line in the chorus “Dreamin’ like Papillon” might be a reference to this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLuF_l1UsZ4
