I’m curious about what people’s reactions to this will be… I understand why they can’t cancel it but I don’t think the GP will react very well

understand why it would be difficult to cancel at this point but the timing feels so wrong. not really sure how they can appropriately tone it down unless they just keep things extremely simple, award the awards and call it a night. my heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones and i hope those affected arent hurt by this decision.

I have conflicting feelings about this.
On one hand post postponing the MAMA Awards would be incredibly difficult. A lot of time and effort has been put into these awards both behind the scenes and publicly. It would be very difficult to reschedule the awards and if they don’t hold them then most likely MAMA won’t happen this year or will be moved to Korea at a much later date.
On the other hand, several are dead and 100s are still missing after the fire, and holding MAMA so soon feels tone deaf and callous. MAMA says they will happen more somberly but I don’t really see how you can hold an award ceremony with several performances in a somber way.

Toning it down and making it solemn is a step at least
I understand there’s a lot of logistics behind an award show of this caliber, and I can respect their decision to go forward because of that. I hope they find a way to honor those lost

I don’t think a final decision has been made yet but rather they are proceeding as planned with some changes while watching for how the situation develops.

I feel like it’s a lose-lose situation so I understand and respect any decision. Even going ahead it’s not going to be the same and the usual big awards will probably be meaningless because they’ll have to tone down celebrations.

Understandable. The award show is suppose to happen in less than 30 hours so it’s too late to suddenly cancel everything. The best they can do is tone down the festivities and donate a portion of the earnings.

It makes sense. To my knowledge, this event was put on in collaboration with the Hong Kong tourism board and Hong Kong advocated heavily for it to be hosted there. If it’s cancelled it’s estimated they could lose tens of billions of won in tourism revenue, staff pay, rent fees, etc. Mnet said they will go with what the government decides and there is no way the government can afford to lose that type of money after pushing for so long to have MAMA in HK. Does that make it the morally right decision? Debatable. But financially? There really isn’t a choice.
I do expect modifications though. Less pyrotechnics in performances, I’m assuming Meovv will no longer perform “Burning Up”, etc etc. and hopefully they encourage people to donate and help their neighbors during the show itself. Hopefully they can get the fires under control soon and please pray or simply keep those affected in your thoughts.

i’m a hong konger and personally i think this is fine – in an ideal world it would be easy to cancel but of course realistically given logistics and planning etc it is difficult. also there’s no precedent for a national mourning period as far as i know like there is in south korea and culturally speaking hk is very much a “just get on with it” type of place for better or for worse.
that said i would totally understand if others disagreed.

Canceling the event is a huge financial loss. They stand to make millions from ticket sales, but if they cancel, they get nothing and still have to pay the vendors for the stage and other services.

As MAMA is government-funded, I can understand why because this tragedy has set them back economically and financially. Practically speaking, cancelling MAMA would put them in even further financial trouble so I can understand why the government can’t afford to lose more now. As far as we know, they haven’t declared it as a national mourning period. I realized that’s something common in Korea but not so much in other countries.

I thought it was right to cancel it from the perspective of Koreans who usually hold national mourning. However, I saw a i-netizen saying that Koreans demand cancellation because they are jealous of having an event outside. Whether they do an event or not, I realize that Korea will be criticized in the end.

i’m not really sure why people are having an issue with this, obviously what happened is a complete tragedy and in an ideal world it would be easy to postpone or cancel, but realistically that isn’t possible and this absolutely isn’t the first time something like this has happened so idk why fans are having such a problem with it all of a sudden. i mean this in the least insensitive/callous-sounding way possible, but a lot of tragic things have happened in countries around the world and it’s not like all events, especially ones with so much planning and money put into them, in those countries were put on hold, unfortunately the world just has to keep spinning.

I just don’t think it’s most people’s place here to be pushing an opinion one way or another on this decision. Not up to us to be telling how Hong Kong people how to feel about the event and the vast majority of people on this subreddit don’t live anywhere near there.
