***The first meaning of “Arirang” is simple, it’s a song.*** *In fact, it’s the most popular traditional folk song in Korea. However, when talking about “Arirang” Koreans will tell you that it’s not just a popular song. Instead, hearing and singing the song reaches the soul of Korea or* [*‘Han’*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_(cultural)) *(wiki). The song and the emotions you feel listening to the song encapsulate the spirit, history, and emotions of the Korean people.*

I encourage everyone to read through more about this, I know I’ll be diving in!!

edit: the album versions are making me tear up ‘rooted in korea’, ‘rooted in music’, ‘living legends’. I’m so proud of them. I’m so proud to be ARMY.

  2. OMG

How beautiful!!!! Arirang is so fitting for BTS and their journey as artists, too.

    Rooted in Korea version

    Rooted in Music version

When they said they were going back to basics, I didn’t expect them to *really* go back to basics. This is their identity and their history not just as idols, but as Koreans.

I read before that Spring Day resonates so much with Koreans because it has Han, the same element that the song Arirang contains. Spring Day evokes the same emotions as Arirang: sorrow, longing, love, and hope. It’s resilience and overcoming hardships. It’s BTS in a nutshell.

I can’t wait to hear what they want to say in this album.

  3. I am crying. It’s all white!! They really are keeping everything under wraps. 🤣🤣

Oh my godddd I love them so fucking much 😭😭😭😭

Choosing the very Korean title of “ARIRANG” for their comeback album that the whoooole world will be tuned in for 😭

The TWO versions being “Rooted in music” and “Rooted in Korean”…oh tannies, I’m so so proud to be a fan allll the time!

I hope that one person I saw wishing for “not all the songs to be in English” feels reassured by this lol

  5. It looks like each member is going to have their own vinyl edition???? My brain is melting…

  6. K-ARMY – can someone plz explain if there is cultural significance to the album name Arirang? I see this name – oh there is a TV channel in SK with this name?

  7. Zestyocelot4528 on

Getting flashbacks to everyone asking JK to sing Arirang in his lives pre military, and him going ‘why Arirang?’

  8. omg guys the name is SOOO GOOD!!! What do you mean, ARIRANG!?!? I love it so much!!

also the versions being called rooted in korea, rooted in music, pls this is like the most perfect name for their comeback album😭😭

  9. PM_ME_UR_HAMSTER_PLZ on

ARIRANG! The Korean flag theories for the circle symbols might be true after all, if not close? How beautiful 🥹

  10. I’m in tears! Arirang is such a fitting name for their comeback album! 🥹

I just know this album is going to be one for the books!💜

  11. Absolutely unexpected album name but I love it! And can’t wait, this seems to truly be something we haven’t heard before from them!

Also, who was it that Yoongi promised to make a folk Korean song with, Namjoon? 😀

  12. The album being titled Arirang truly brought tears to my eyes! These Korean legends 💜💜

  13. WOW..naming the album Arirang is insane. The tannies never fail to surprise us. If the title track samples Arirang I will lose it!

  14. well, this is definitely NOT an English album with a title like this. 🤣

    this is exciting

  15. Guys, I’m ill and seeing the album name turned my excited scream into a violent coughing fit. Worth it. 😭😭

What a poetic, fitting name. Maybe we can expect some of the music to have a traditional folk sound influence? I mean I hope so, I’m a sucker for that kind of sh*t!!

Hi r/bangtan! This is so exciting. Just wanted to remind everyone of the conversation over on our [Purple Planet Project thread about sustainably participating in the comeback and tour](https://www.reddit.com/r/bangtan/s/Cf9T2XUKdt). It is okay to buy as many versions as you want, and it is extremely okay to get none too! We just want to be conscious of not being wasteful so do spare a thought around this before you decide to make your purchase!! Happy comeback ARMY! Fighting!!

AAAHHHH so like BTS to always emphasize their korean roots. I am so excited for this album!

For anyone asking, arirang is widely loved representative Korean folk song and could be considered an unofficial anthem. There are many many variations, with differences in lyrics depending on geographic region within Korea.

During Japan’s occupation of Korea, it was a criminal offense to exhibit any sort of patriotism, which included singing Korea’s national anthem. Arirang became an unofficial resistance anthem and according to namuwiki, was sung by the Korean Liberation Army (the Miryang Arirang version). This is also why it lends itself to embodying the korean concept of “han”.

Here is [my favourite version on youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_2yhCjGQuQ) of arirang sung by Song So Hee, a famous gugak (traditional korean music) singer

and of course the [BTS version they performed at KCON 2016 (youtube)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwc5zTayVJw)!!!!

  19. So relieved the album is not just called “The 5th Album” as I feared after the previous notice

  20. multistansendhelp on

Why am I acting like me buying every version would be financially irresponsible like I didn’t buy the Proof special edition that was like eleventy billion dollars.

  21. The logo looking like the Korean flag, releasing this after finishing their enlistment… BTS are going back to their roots. I think the world tour could be a big showing of Korean culture and how proud of their country they are.

  22. It’s not a secret code, not a provocation, not a hidden message to “decode.”
Choosing this title feels less like symbolism for effect and more like cultural memory — something shared, carried, and understood without needing drama.

  23. fandom_wayoflife on

This feels so grand and generational but also so rooted and grounded 🥹

I can’t wait to see the album rollout! Not only will the name of the album be echoed across the globe but I’m sure a lot of Korean GP will be curious enough to check it out
