Song Discussion 7 – Funky Glitter Christmas


This is the last NMIXX song of 2022, and the last to feature Jinni — her departure was announced about two weeks after this song came out. Obviously it has a Christmas theme, and my impression is that it was released to keep interest in the group during the time between Entwurf and their first album release (Expergo).

  • MV
  • Recording – This is the first full recording video they did that shows the suggestions from the directors and such. Jinni's parts not included.
  • It's Live – no Jinni, suggesting it was filmed after her departure, I guess.
  • Live performance – in Incheon, I believe (recent).
  • Special holiday performance – This was done along with Blue Valentine at the end of last year.

As usual, I will add any other interesting versions or live performances that people think are good.

    I have to admit that I brushed this song off when I first heard it — it was still fairly early in my NMIXX experience, and I may have closed the youtube tab as soon as I heard “look at dem sparkles in the air.”

    But now I like the song. I like the way they incorporated little snippets of Christmas carols in, which personally works much better to me than the wholesale borrowing of such songs (like in Young Dumb Stupid or Play Love Games from KoL).

    I do wonder why they had Kyujin instead of Lily do the English parts; I guess maybe it makes it seem more Kpop if the English member isn’t doing that. She does a good job! The adlibs are good too.

    I love the Incheon live video too. They are having so much fun with the song and their energy really fits the positive feel.

    (I thought for a long time the lyrics were “It feels so good, so right, and the sun is shining bright”)

    Unfortunately, I joined the fandom long after Jinni, so I don’t really have an opinion on her or the exit. I will say it was confusing when trying to learn the members based on newer videos, then going back and seeing 7 members.

    Funky Glitter Christmas to me is just the RIGHT amount of Christmas in a song. It’s clearly themed, but has more of a general party vibe to it. I really enjoyed the MV and the Special Holiday Performance from last year.
