I found a text exchange between my friend and me about how I initially started telling the members apart in group photos. This made me curious, how did you all learn to do it when you were starting out?
I look at their faces. They’re easy to distinguish after you follow them for a bit.

I never had this issue of having to learn names and faces with any group. I’m pretty good at recognizing faces even ones with minimal differences such as twins. I’ve been a J-pop fan (including AKB48 with like A TON of members) ever since primary school so that might have trained me. My friends that I helped get into K-pop learned names and faces by me quizzing them all the time. I would send random photos or gifs and make them guess the member while always pointing out a certain detail about that person that helped them differentiate. This really helps! Associate each member with something very distinct

I watched Sixteen when it came out, so by the time the group was announced, I already knew everyone’s faces and names.

when i was first trying to learn who was who, for some reason i could almost always get jeongyeon, nayeon, jihyo, dahyun, and momo if she was the only one with bangs.
tzuyu and chaeyoung were the next two i could pick out and for some reason mina and sana were the two i got mixed up on the most even though they look absolutely nothing alike??
i’ll still occasionally get tripped up between sana, tzuyu, and momo when she doesn’t have bangs but 99% of the time i’m like. they all look so different from each other.

Funny enough, this silly rehearsal they did where they dressed as different blue characters helped me a lot. It tells their names at the start of the video and I was able to say:
The two with their faces most obscured, Kyujin and Haewon, are easy to ID during Blue Valentine as Kyujin always starts and Haewon always ends the song.
When I couldn’t remember their names, I watched lyric videos that highlighted who was singing when. That helped me a lot with recognizing their faces too. By the time I had the names down I had no problem distinguishing between them, thankfully!

Jihyo – usually has tanner skin than the other girls + beauty mark on tip of nose // Momo – almost always has a bob and bangs lol // Chaeyoung – by the beauty mark underneath her lips // Tzuyu – she’s the tallest member so pretty identifiable // Dahyun – much paler than the other girls + only member with monolid eyes //
Nayeon – has rounder cheeks and heart shaped lips (used to be able to tell by her smile but she got her teeth done lol) // Mina – beauty mark on nose bridge + she has a very slim nose // Sana – this girls cheekbones are so high and gorgeous, I can always tell it’s her by the face shape // Jeongeon – typically has a “tomboy” type haircut, but these days I tell her apart by her high nose bridge

This is so funny. Chae and Mina were two of the easiest for me because of their moles. I always look for identifying facial features. Nayeon’s teeth and Dahyun’s eyes also made them easy to pick out. Once you get them down though, it’s hard to imagine that you ever thought they looked similar at all

They were the first group I got into and I really though they looked similar. But now compared to alot of the newer groups that are debuting they all have distinct features. But I just watched a bunch of their TTT episodes. The MVs are tricky at first cos they always change their looks.

i dont even know. but they were probably the easiest ever to tell apart for me, considering that i just started seeing some videos of them on instagram and i just happened to learn (like i did, after a longer time in most cases, with Le Sserafim, IVE, aespa, NewJeans, Babymonster, Blackpink, ILLIT, AtHeart, Gidle, cause i didnt use to watch any socalled “variety content” nor even MVs until some weeks ago. instead i learnt 2NE1 members through the MVs + google, Brown Eyed Girls through a “guide to” on youtube + only 2 MVs, and im currently learning SNSD members through compilations of random clips on youtube, MVs and stage performances. i discovered some months late that this is the best way, most fun and useful to get to know them overall and not just tell apart)

For me I had a hard time with MiSaMo at first. The most recognizable ones for me in their early days were Jihyo (due to eyes), Chaeyoung (whatever the lineup, she’s tiny) and Jeongyeon (she mostly had short hair then)

3 gen GG is pretty easy to identify members. But the late 4 gen and 5 gen GG, the members are very similar to each other, and the members of different groups are very similar to each other.

I knew Nayeon from Pop and her cheeks, Tzuyu from her archery and her ears and how tall she is (i thought she was the leader lol), but after that i just Knew Sana was Sana bc i was “OMG! who is that?!” Again and again so if one appeared and blew my mind that was always Sana.
Momo screamed Japanese girl to me (she had the hime cut around that time)
Chaeyoung her eyes she looks like a kitten to me.
Jeongie was tricky idk why, i remember trying to pick her out.
Jihyo she was really different and stood out to me.
Dahyun her nose and her eyes

It honestly takes time, don’t worry about it and it won’t be long before you recognize them all. The next step is recognizing their voices. I’m at the point where I can recognize them by their abs 🤣.
