Without speculation on whether it was purposeful/malice is involved: does all that needs to be proven is that his mother’s company set up for his entertainment activities IS a proper business with assets and operational expenses that warrant the portion of (lesser taxed) money it receives from Cha Eunwoo’s work? is that my understanding?

Unfortunately what’s already happening is that, to the koreans who have to live in the face of wealth inequality, seeing a monetary figure like this is ruffling some feathers. I hope drastic backlash will wait until all investigation concludes in certainty

A paper company, his mother got involved, and requested that the notice be sent out only after he enlisted.

  3. >ASTRO‘s Cha Eunwoo is currently under investigation by the National Tax Service of tax evasion. He was notified by the National Tax Service that he owes over ₩20.0 billion KRW (about $13.7 million USD) in additional taxes, including income tax, on charges of tax evasion. This is considered one of the largest additional tax assessments ever imposed on a celebrity.

I was like how much could this be but holy frick. I’ve researched tax evasion case studies in Australia to the tune of a few million and even those are quite exceptional (and in nominal terms Australia is right next to SK in GDP). In my experience tax evasion really is one of those situations where it’s largely impossible to claim ignorance because it requires a level of deception, or at least clever accounting practices, to get out of what you really owe. Good luck mate.

If he owes over 20 billion Won then how much money does he actually have? I knew he was rich but thats RICH.

  5. Seeing the company involved and knowing their history, let’s not jump into conclusons and wait until this is investigated.

  6. Can’t hate on the man.  Nothing like being taxed on your pay and then on the goods you buy with the taxed money

  7. > The core issue in this matter is whether the corporation established by Cha Eunwoo’s mother constitutes a substantive taxable entity

Seems like this isn’t him lying about amounts earned or things like that, rather a possible misclassification of what kind of taxes he needs to pay. I see a few potential outcomes here

    1. The taxes were filed properly and this all goes away

    2. The taxes were filed improperly but Eunwoo himself didn’t know about it, he probably doesn’t face criminal charges

    3. The taxes were filed improperly by his orders because he wanted to save money. In this case he should go to jail but probably end up with just a slap on the wrist

This is the exact purpose of audits, to find out the truth and whether there was any misconduct/fraud.

  8. He must have a good financial advisor (except the tax evasion thing) unless he’s in some shady business (except the tax evasion lol) because regardless how popular he is, I don’t think he makes so much that he has more than 13 million usd unpaid taxes.

He doesn’t make his money from touring, even blackpink girls are estimated to make ~1-2 million per brand endorsement, he’s not one of the top lead actors with many hit kdramas, his label also takes a cut and I assume he pays taxes to some extent as well because he can’t get away with not paying at all for long so holy shit I guess?
