    >For K-pop artists, the appeal runs deeper than exposure.

    >Most festivalgoers are ordinary students or visitors already on campus — the general public that K-pop groups rarely access through their usual promotional channels. While dedicated fans attend to see specific acts, the majority have no particular allegiance, making every performance an opportunity to appeal to a wider audience.

While I wait for the mods to restore my other thread, this is a nice article about an interesting topic.

Kpop certainly grown outside Korea but continues to lose ground bit by bit in the domestic market. Public-ish performances for the younger generation, who may or may not be interested in them, can push idols into broader public awareness. In the past, idols would appear on variety shows on TV and with some luck that exposure could define their entire career. Now that those days are gone, newer generations of idols do not have many opportunities to become known outside their own fandoms or people who are already interested in Kpop.

  2. Love this! I feel like there’s so much conversation on kpop groups working for international exposure, that really the most important/forgotten are the domestic fans.

  3. Good article full of facts. University festivals are one of the few times that KPop groups perform live for general audiences that aren’t full of KPop die-hards. It’s a big opportunity to grow their fandom, but only if their performance can truly move people who haven’t already bought in.

as a H1-key fan I owe my life to midsized korean university festivals

LSF just crammed 9 songs and a remix into a 48 minute set for a uni show. These women are fit AF.

That kind of cardio takes dedication, time, and careful attention to nutrition. Poetic for a group that had to film their first MV in the HYBE HQ gym because they ran out of money.

  6. Well, yeah. Pre-Supersonic fromis_9 was reportedly earning 20k dollars per university festival appearance. Now that their songs are cracking the top ten of every charts, they’re probably earning a shitton more

I love seeing the fancams come out from the university festivals. They’re some of my favorite performances and the outfits are always really cute.

Lee Changsub(BTOB) is among fav soloist that got invited to university festival. For May alone he was invited to 7 universities :

    – ✅️May 12 Tuesday 🏫 Pukyong National University (Busan)
    – ✅️May 14 Thursday 🏫 Namseoul University (Cheonan)
    – ✅️May 16 Saturday 🏫 State University of New York at Korea (Songdo)
    – ✅️May 18 Monday 🏫 Seoul City University (Seoul)
    – ✅️May 19 Tuesday 🏫 Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Global (Yongin)
    – ✅️May 21 Thursday 🏫 Hannam University (Daejeon)
    – ✅️May 29 Friday 🏫 Yuhan University (Bucheon)

One of the reason is he was hosting a youtube show about university department review(Changing Major/Jeongwaja). Since that he is so popular among the students

  9. I wonder if BTS will ever get to perform on these university festivals in the future? I didn’t think they’ve been on one before

edit: I just ask a question, nothing harmful but I’m getting downvoted lmao

University concerts also keep groups alive! I’m sure they’re a good in between for comebacks and concert touring, it is important to get booked to show there’s interest for the music acts in Korea too

Kiikii are making the rounds this time, they are in a lot of lineups. Cortis were also invited to two festivals it’s good to see that they are being pushed in Korea even if their main audience is international.
